ABOUT THE FILM

The setting is London in the summer of 1593, where a struggling playwright, known as William Shakespeare (Joseph Fiennes), seems to have developed a severe case of writers block over his latest piece of work. It isn't until he gets caught up in a meaningful, intense love affair, with the lovely Viola De Lesseps (Gwyneth Paltrow), that he can get the quill flowing again, and create his masterpiece, "Romeo & Juliet."

ABOUT THE PRODUCERS

Executive Producer: Julie Goldstein - Relatively new to producing, this film was her second effort. She went on to be an executive producer for films: "Holy Smoke," "Blow Dry," and "Serendipity ."

Executive Producer: Bob Weinstein - Co-founder of Miramax Films, and an active producer since the mid-1980's. Some of the films that he was an executive producer for are "Cider House Rules," "Chocolat," "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, and "Kate and Leopold."

NOTES & TRIVA

Steve Lawrence won the Oscar for Best Art Direction. Other examples of his fine work can be seen in: "Lost in Space," "Quills", "Enemy At the Gates," "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," and "The World is not Enough."

Humberto Cornejo and Sandy Powell won Oscars for Best Costume Design.

Humberto Cornejo has been involved in costume design since 1942, in mostly Spanish -speaking films. She has enjoyed a long and lustrious career. Her crowning glory was receiving her Oscar for her work in this fine film. Her other films include:( "Todo sobre mi madre," "Libertarias," "Familia" & "Un Paraguas para tres")

Sandy Powell started her career at the tender age of 26, and has been going strong ever since. Some of her other films she worked on are "Edward 11","Rob Roy," and "The End of An Affair."

Mark Norman & Tom Stoppard won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

Mark Norman also was a producer on this film. He also wrote "Zandy's Bride" and "Oklahoma Crude."

Tom Stoppard, originally from Zl’n, Czechoslovakia, and has been a prolific screenwriter and writer of many teleplays and stage plays since the mid 1960's. Also, he has worked as a script doctor uncredited on such films as "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade." He is currently working on "Indiana Jones 4" due to come out in 2004.
