"A true, manly
man action movie full of havoc and mayhem, glorious hand to
hand fights, martial arts, and plenty of suspense!!"
A battleship's cook causes trouble and death
for the ruthless bunch of terrorists who take over the ship.
While the U.S.S Missouri on its way back to
port, to be decommissioned, the crew prepares to celebrate their
Captain Adams' birthday, complete with a hired band, led by
William Strannix, and a playboy bunny to jump out of the birthday
cake. Unfortunately, William Strannix (Tommy Lee Jones), and
his band turn out to be vicious terrorists, who kill Captain
Adams (Patrick O'Neal) in his office, and take over the battleship.
Luckily for the sailors aboard, a former Navy Seal Captain,
but now the ship's cook, Casey Ryback (Steven Seagal), escapes
capture and deploys a mission of guerrilla warfare against these
grisly characters, who are up to no good. This offensive effort
includes martial arts, weapons, tactics, and explosives, which
are all areas of expertise of Casey Ryback.
Along the way, Casey comes across the playboy
bunny, Jordan Tate (Erika Eleniak), hiding in the locker room.
When she refuses to stay quietly in the locker he puts her into,
he allows her to tag along and help him a little. She does come
in handy.
Director Andrew Davis, who directed such films
as THE FUGITIVE, CODE OF SILENCE and "A PERFECT MURDER,"
is no stranger to intense, suspenseful action films. Davis does
an outstanding job envisioning the action sequences, crisp pacing,
and keeping this terrific cast right on top of their parts,
helping to make a great action film.
This marvelous script, by J.F. Lawton, gives
the audience plenty of action, martial arts fighting, humor,
suspense, and dastardly bad guys, just aching to get their butts
kicked by the ultimate manly-man, Steven Seagal.
Seagal is perfectly cast as a former Navy SEAL
who is crafty as a fox, as well as a skilled and courageous
warrior. Seagal has never been better than his hard hitting,
wisecracking character that he plays here. Interestingly, before
he was an actor, Seagal was the martial arts teacher for Michael
Ovitz, who is the head of the CAA Talent Agency in Hollywood.
As the bad guys, Tommy Lee Jones (as William
Strannix) and Gary Busey (as Commander Krill) both excel. They
obviously had fun playing the roles, so the viewer has fun too.
A favorite sequence of scenes happen around
a line spoken by Tommy Lee Jones, when he finds some guys in
his gang dead because of Casey's creative handiwork. He is truly
impressed with the mayhem seen before his eyes; men are hanging
around in grotesque shapes and positions, due to walking into
a surprise. "Doumer, Doumer, Doumer. Why didn't you hire
this person? I don't know what his price would have been, but
it would have been WORTH it."
Erika Eleniak, as Jordan Tate (a Playboy Playmate),
is good as the girl in the cake and as Casey's helper. She even
takes phone messages from Admiral Bates, who calls the ship
to talk to Casey, a humorous moment in the script. Admiral Bates:
"This is Admiral Bates speaking. I am trying to get a hold
of Chief Ryback. Is he about?" Jordan Tate: "He is
in a gunfight right now. I'm gonna have to take a message."
Another favorite scene is a fight scene between
Seagal and a bad guy in the kitchen. Seagal's in great form
and the fight scene has great editing. Robert A. Ferretti is
responsible for the tight "cutting."
Also, don't miss the final fight between Seagal
and Jones.
This film is rated R, because of violence and
general mayhem. It is definitely meant for the over 17 crowd
who like the traditional, hard, manly man action yarns.
