DR. STRANGELOVE (1964)
An unlikely, but funny, comedy about World War 3.
If you liked "Dr. Strangelove" you may like "2001."
Director Stanley Kubrick's brilliant dark comedy is just as relevant today as when it first came out. Kubrick received a nomination for best directing.
Strong cast includes: Peter Sellers, George C. Scott, Sterling Hayden, Slim Pickens, Keenan Wynn, and James Earl Jones.
The basic story involves U.S. president's attempt to cope when a fanatical American general launches a bomber attack against Russia. Eventually all the bombers are called back, except one.
The film is a classic because of the timeless story, funny script, and great acting, particularly Scott and Sellers, who has a dual role, (as the President AND Dr. Strangelove). The elaborate sets by Ken Adam are also impressive.
Kubrick created a different cinematic look, for different sections of the movie. As a result, it's like watching several films in one. Only a genius like Kubrick could pull this off.
The film is filled with memorable moments. My favorite scene takes place in the War Room. When a squabble breaks out between Scott and a Russian representative, the president (Sellers), reprimands them, "Gentlemen, you can't fight in here. This is the War Room." Good point.
At the time of the film's initial release it was very controversial. Many critics hated it, calling it the worst film of all time.
The ultimate black comedy... the nightmare comedy!
The great Peter Sellers plays 3 different parts!
