Promotional Lines: "Do you like fish? Well, he likes you too..." "Don't Go in the Water."

Quote from Quint: "This shark, swallow you whole. No shakin', no tenderizin', down you go."

Quote from Matt Hopper: "Mr. Vaughan, what we are dealing with here is a perfect engine, er... an eating machine. It's really a miracle of evolution. All this machine does is swim and eat and make little sharks and that's all."

The basic story involves a giant shark's attacks on the residents of a New England town, and the efforts of three diverse men, police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider), shark specialist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss), and a grizzled sailor Quint (Robert Shaw), to try to stop it. Eventually, the three set out in a small boat in search of the great white.

The film is a classic because of its intense story (screenplay by Peter Benchley and Carl Gottlieb, from Benchley's novel), great direction, fine acting, and John Williams' memorable score. The film won three Oscars, including one for best musical score.

The film benefits from outstanding editing, which gives the film excellent pacing and momentum.Verna Fields, the editor, won an Oscar for her brilliant work here.

My favorite scene takes place at night aboard the boat. As Scheider watches in amazement, Shaw and Dreyfuss compare shark bites and fish stories. It's a classic male bonding scene.

Supposedly, Director Spielberg encountered numerous problems shooting "Jaws." Most of them related to the difficulties of shooting on water, as well as a mal-functioning mechanical shark. The fact the he made such a good film under the circumstances, is a testament to both his great directing ability and legendary powers of concentration. He grabs the audience from the first scene, hooking US like a great white shark and never letting go.

If you enjoyed JAWS you may like CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, ANACONDA, DANTE'S PEAK, and/or MOBY DICK.
