Star Trek Review: WHOM GODS DESTROY Director Herb Wallerstein's, "WHOM GODS DESTROY," is an oddly entertaining Sci-Fi yarn. Wallerstein also directed these classic "Trek" episodes: "The Tholian Web", "Turnabout Intruder", and "That Which Survives". He also directed the TV movie, "Snowbeast," (1977). The Teleplay, by Lee Erwin, (Story by Jerry Sohl and Lee Erwin), is pretty decent for a 3rd season episode. Erwin also wrote the movie, "The Flying Fontaines," (1959). Steve Ihnat ("The Chase" and "Fuzz") is fascinating as Captain Garth, a former Star Fleet dude who wigged out and landed in the rubber room with the crazy alien rifraff. Under Wallerstein's confident direction, Ihnat presents insanity in a twinkly eyed, self- amused manner, that is both seductive and scary. Yvonne Craig vamps it up agreeably as a green skinned Orion gal, crazy as a loon, with hot pants and a habit of plagarizing Shakespeare. She is best known for playing Batgirl, on the television series, "Batman". This is one of those episodes where Captain Kirk is zapped by invisible energy fields/pain sources, and must writhe and squirm in pain. Shatner, overdoing it, becomes a PERSON IN PAIN! This is broad stroke, commercial television at it's least subtle. Most of this episode takes place either on the bridge of Enterprise, or inside the insane asylum on the planet. There are few exterior scenes. Although probably a result more of budgetary restricion than art, the inherent claustrophobia of the episode works in favor of the episode's confinement /identity / insanity theme. "WHOM GODS DESTROY" should be somewhat watchable for some Sci-Fi viewers. "Bat Girl" fans may dig this one. BACK TO: TREK EPISODE |
