Star Trek Review: T HE CONSCIENCE OF THE KING
Director Gerd Oswald's, "THE CONSCIENCE OF THE KING," is a
classy, sophisticated Sci-Fi drama, effectively mixing space and Shakespeare.
Oswald also directed the classic Trek episode, "The Alternative
Factor," as well as episodes to the television series, "Bonanza,"
and "The Outer Limits".
Director Oswald's skill with actors, and his expertise with the dramatic
use of light and shadow, make "THE CONSCIENCE OF THE KING"
a uniquely intense Classic "Trek" episode.
Arnold Moss ("My Favorite Spy" and "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.")
plays Anton Karidian, who might be the wanted mass murderer, Governor
Kodos. Under Oswald's astute direction, Moss, as Shakespearean actor,
Karidian, gives a towering performance using his world-weary face, and
well modulated speaking voice, to best advantage.
Barry Trivers' Teleplay is adult and poetic. He turns his story about
a mass murderer, hiding out in a traveling Shakespeare troupe, into
a tragedy worthy of the Bard himself!
Barbara Anderson ("Mission: Impossible", "Ironside")
gives a complex performance as Karidian's daughter, Lenore, a woman
slipping into madness. Anderson won an Emmy for "Ironside,"
in 1968.
"THE CONSCIENCE OF THE KING" should be fairly watchable for
most Sci-Fi viewers. Shakespeare buffs will dig this episode. "THE
CONSCIENCE OF THE KING" offers royal entertainment!
