Star Trek Review: METAMORPHOSIS
Director Ralph Senensky's, METAMORPHOSIS, is a moving and truly romantic
"Star Trek" episode. Senensky's other directing credits include:
"Obsession", "Bread and Circuses", among others.
Elinor Donahue gives a multi-layered performance as Assistant Federation
Commissioner, Nancy Hedford. Donahue, who Baby Boomer's will recall
as the teenager, "Princess," on "Father Knows Best",
who went on to a long TV career in continuing roles, as diverse as Jack
Klugman's girlfriend on "The Odd Couple," and Chris Elliot's
mom on "Get A Life".
Glenn Corbett ("Dallas") quietly conveys great depth of emotion
under Senensky's firm direction. Corbett came to fame as George Maharis'
replacement, opposite Martin Milner, for the final season of the classic
60's TV show, "Route 66".
The main Special Effects here involve "the Companion," which
was a mobile, translucent cloud with sparkly lights inside. The quality
FX help create the episode's fairy tale mood.
This is the episode which introduced the Universal Translator. It appears
to be a silver, modified flashlight, and does not impress. Majel Barrett
("Star Trek", "Star Trek: The Next Generation")
provided the voice of the companion we hear on the Universal Translator.
METAMORPHOSIS will be highly watchable for most Sci-Fi viewers. "Father
Knows Best" fans will especially dig this episode. METAMORPHOSIS
is magical!
