Star Trek Review: A PIECE OF THE ACTION
Director James Komack's, A PIECE OF THE ACTION, is a fun, clever Sci-Fi
episode. Komak's other directing credits include: "The Courtship
of Eddie's Father", "Chico and the Man", and "Welcome
Back Kotter".
"Alice" fans will enjoy watching Vic "Mel" Tayback,
as a combative mob boss, JoJo Krako. The consummate TV character actor,
he is highly watchable, as always. Anthony Caruso brings a gruff realism
to his portrayal of rival mob boss, Bela Oxmyx. His many TV credits
include: "The Girl From UNCLE" and "The Adventures of
Superman".
Both Shatner and Nimoy look good in their 20's duds. While the taller,
more slender Nimoy has a lithe grace in his threads, the shorter, stouter
Shatner brings a James Cagney - like energy and body language to his
mob character that is just right, under Komack's astute direction.
My favorite scene is when Kirk, held captive by mobsters, plays a mythical
card game, called "Fizzbin," with his captors. Some Trekkers
have apparently developed actual playing rules for the game, and supposedly
play it with each other at conventions. What's next, "Federation
Bingo"?
A PIECE OF THE ACTION is the only episode in which the Vulcan Science
Officer is addressed, by Captain Kirk, as "Spocko". As delivered
by a mob-lingo spouting Shatner, it's rather endearing.
A PIECE OF THE ACTION should be highly watchable for most Sci-Fi viewers.
Fans of the television series "Alice" will dig this episode.
A PIECE OF THE ACTION delivers the goods!
