Star Trek Review: THE NAKED TIME
Director Marc Daniels,' "THE NAKED TIME," is a fascinating,
revealing "Trek" episode. Daniels also directed numerous classic
Treks, as well as episodes of "The Man From UNCLE".
Writer John D.F. Black's story premise is very clever. By subjecting
the Enterprise crew to a disease, which lowers inhibitions, we are allowed
to see aspects of the Trek characters we would not normally be privy
to. Black also wrote the TV movie, "The Clone Masters", and
episodes for various other series, including: "Wagon Train".
"THE NAKED TIME" is the only classic "Trek" episode
in which Mr. Spock cries. His agonized statement to Kirk, "I never
told my mother I loved her," is heartfelt and Leonard Nimoy's performance,
under Daniels' sensitive direction, is superb.
Captain Kirk is the only major crew member who does not succumb to the
space disease. The fact that his devotion to Enterprise allows him to
stave off the ailment is an interesting character revelation. While
the studly Kirk may amorously love women all over the galaxy, he will
always return to his one true love: the U.S.S. Enterprise.
This episode contains one of the two appearances of crewman, Lt. Kevin
Riley, played by Bruce Hyde, ("The Conscience of the King").
Although Riley never became a regular character, and didn't show up
after the first season, his atonal rendition of, "I'll Take You
Home Again, Kathleen," over the ship's intercom system, is unforgettable,
if not exactly memorable.
"THE NAKED TIME" should be highly watchable for most Sci-Fi
viewers. Sulu/George Takei fans will definitely dig this episode. "THE
NAKED TIME" is a very good time!
