ABOUT THE PRODUCER

Sam Spiegel (1901 - 1985), born in Poland, who's been in Hollywood since 1941 and has produced three Best Pictures: ON THE WATERFRONT (54), THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI (57), and LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (62).

Spiegel's other works include: TALES OF MANHATTAN, THE AFRICAN QUEEN, THE CHASE, THE NIGHT OF THE GENERALS, NICHOLAS AND ALEXANDRA, and THE LAST TYCOON.

NOTES & TRIVA

Budd Schulberg received the Story & Screenplay Oscar. While Boris Kaufman was awarded the Oscar for B&W Cinematography. Gene Milford received his Oscar for Editing. Richard Day received the Art Direction (B&W) Oscar.

Loosely based on several newspaper articles by Malcolm Johnson.

This was Eva Marie Saint's first movie and she won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

Please note: Lee J. Cobb, Karl Malden, and Rod Steiger (his first film) all received nominations for the Best Supporting Oscar.

Considered one of the most acclaimed films of all time.
